General Maintenance: Do not shower, sleep, expose to harsh chemicals such as those found in spas/swimming pools, or exercise while wearing Quirky Black Dog creations.
Apply hairspray, lotions, perfumes or other skincare/sunscreen products BEFORE putting on your jewellery to avoid damaging the stones/wire work, and to avoid a reaction between the chemicals and copper that might cause an allergic rash on your skin.
After you take off your wire wrapped jewellery, wipe it with a clean cloth and store it following the instructions below:
Store your copper jewellery in a clean dry place away and avoid intense and/or prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Some stones are sensitive to the sun and colours may become muted if exposed for a great length of time.
Keep your wire jewellery away from the rest of your jewellery. The metal will stay shinier longer, it will minimise scratches and the gemstones will not be damaged. Keep away from children.
Natural Metals & Oxidisation: Quirky Black Dog creations in copper, bronze and sterling silver are made from raw materials which will age or patina with wear and use. Most Quirky Black Dog creations in copper and bronze have already been patinated by hand with a Liver of Sulphur patination process. However, no further treatments have been added to prevent the continued natural oxidising process. To clean your piece or to avoid further patina, clean/polish your copper/bronze jewellery on a regular basis (once a month or more frequently, depending upon how regularly you wear your piece). Use your polishing cloth to gently rub away any residue, and to polish the finish of your jewellery. Be careful not to apply too much pressure. This could cause the copper to bend. Do not drop, bend, untwist or try to take out the stones.
Cleaning and polishing your jewellery:
Do not clean Quirky Black Dog creations with an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner or abrasive fabrics.
When your Quirky Black Dog piece becomes dark or the surface is no longer shiny you can clean/polish it with one of our Polishing cloths available for sale via our website or at one of our market appearances.
Ensure you store the polishing cloth in the plastic zip lock bag. Use only with clean and dry hands. Do not wet the polishing cloth. Be very careful when polishing your wire wrapped jewellery. Polish the piece slowly, trying not to push or warp the wire wrapping too much.
When finished, take a tooth brush and a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid in warm water and gently start cleaning any residue or fibres away. Be very careful and do it slowly so as to not damage or untwist any wires.
Use a clean dry cloth or paper towel to dry your jewellery as much as you can.
The chain used on the pendant is an Antique Copper plated Steel ball chain. Never use a polishing pad to make the chain brighter. Otherwise you will rub the copper off the chain. Use only a tooth brush and soap to make it clean again.
Care of Gemstones: Be very particular about the gemstones in your Quirky Black Dog creation, as some cannot be wet or soaked in water, and can be vulnerable to breakage if it has inclusions or cleavage planes that can weaken the structure. Also, some soft stones or colour treated stones will not tolerate polish. Below are some cleaning categories and the stones that are affected.
Safe in anything: Diamonds and Spinels
Safe in lukewarm but not hot water, safe with silver polish cloth: (unless lead glass filled), Sapphire, Topaz, Aquamarine, Tourmaline, Amethyst, Citrine, Smoky Quartz, Rock Crystal, Zircon, Cubic Zirconia, and Onyx.
Safe in lukewarm water: Garnet, Jade, Peridot, Moonstone, Hematite, Tanzanite
Don't soak in anything: Emerald, Opal, Lapis Lazuli, Coral, Amber and Malachite
Do not get wet: Opal doublets and triplets (thin layer of opal cemented to another stone backing), Turquoise (some have been enhanced with artificial dyes).
